My Weekly Natural Hair Wash Routine

The night before I wash my hair I detangle it with an inexpensive conditioner. I've found the best way for me to detangle; since my hair is growing out; is to section it into 8 sections.  2 at the very top of my head; 1 on each side; beginning at the tip of my ears forward, and 4 in the back of my head; 2 on each side.  Once I've sectioned my hair using elastic hair bands (this process is aka mini pineapples or just pineapple for those  with longer hair.  The longer your hair; the fewer pineapples needed.)  I finger detangle then re-band each section. After finger detangling is complete; I wear a plastic cap, and satin cap, or sleep on satin pillowcase for the night.  Sometime the next day; usually in the A.M. hours; I rinse the conditioner from my hair; with the hair bands still in place, (I take them out; if I feel that I  have detangled really well; I will take them out, and put them back in after the rinse.)  Taking down 1 hair band at a time; I apply leave-in conditioner and  style; usually in 2 strand twist  or finger coils.
I do the above routine 3 times a month, and the 4th week I follow the same procedures, but once I rinse the conditioner out, I wash my hair with African Black Soap.  Once the black soap is rinsed out; I add protein rich conditioner; cover my hair with a plastic cap and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.  Next; I rinse  the protein conditioner and add a leave-in conditioner, and style as usual.
This routine works for me right now; next week, month, year; this routine may change.  I researched and found my routine on YouTube.  I tweeked it to fit me.  Check out my pictures below.

If You Snooze You Lose Your Turkey Burger

I ate oatmeal for lunch and bought a turkey burger to eat later for dinner. When I got home I was twisting and headed straight to the restroom.  I threw my work bag and the plastic bag containing my turkey burger on the sofa as I twisted by. After talking on the phone, turning on the TV, and drinking a glass of water; I noticed London (my 4 years old Yorkshire Terrier) was ready to go outside; so I let her out.  As I walked back through the house I noticed an empty open faced hamburger bun and sandwich wrapper on the floor. My brother-in-law had just come in; so I figured London got too close to a burger and he let her have it. While I was watching TV I thought about the turkey burger I purchased earlier. Horror came across my face when my mind back tracked to the open faced hamburger bun on the floor in the other room.  I rushed to the sofa to see if my burger was safe; it was not. The plastic bag was torn open and my turkey burger was missing. London was outside running around like she was innocent and free.  :-/  I couldn't be angry with the little crumb snatcher because I should have left my burger in my work bag, remembered to put it in the refrigerator, or put it up out of her reach.  With London around; if you snooze you lose your turkey burger.

Small World - Is That Who I Think It Is?

My husband and I were hanging out with his cousin; helping her move into her new home.  She told me about this guy she met online last June.  They hadn't met yet, but would be meeting tomorrow.   We came back, the next evening to hook-up a dvd  player.   My husband stepped in the house first with the dvd player and headed straight for the TV; which was on the right side of the room.   As I was walking up to the door I saw this figure that I assumed was her nephew.   In my mind I was debating whether to ask him about his recent illness, but decided against it.   I stepped through the door and focused in on the figure's face.  The words that cross my mind and past my lips were the same; "Small World, Small World.   That's my Ex-Husband!"  My current husband on my right kneeling down working on the TV/DVD, and my ex-husband; whom l haven't seen or talked to in about 15+ years  and my husband's cousin standing to the left  of me looking shocked.  My husband got up and shook my ex's hand, and they both said..."what's up man" and then he knelt back down and completed setting up the TV/DVD.  I repeat; Small World!; Small World! :-/

I Am A Member of the Shred Nation w/Dr. Ian Smith

I began "The SHRED Revolutionary DIET" a week ago Monday; surprizingly It has been pretty easy to follow the plan; so far.  There are step by step menus giving choices on what foods can be eaten at each meal.  I never get hungry, and I have very few cravings. I'm eating a meal every 3 to 4 hours and a snack in between those meals.  The plan does require 30 minutes exercise atleast 5 days a week, and drinking a cup of water before and with each meal (two cups total).  I weighed in a week ago Tuesday evening because I don't own a working scale in my home.  If I did own a scale it would be like a drug to me; it would be calling me everyday, several times a day to weigh in.  So; my best bet is to continue using the scale at my place of employment; this will allow me to have more will power to only weigh in once a week ;-).

The actual "Shred Revolutionary Diet" book  was given to me as a gift by a fellow "Shreder" (A Shreder is a person following the Shred diet plan).   He was excited about the success he was having thus far.  This diet is measured in 7 day intervals (a week); each week has slightly different menu choices, and  each 6 week period is called a phase.  If you haven't lost all the weight you want in 6 weeks; you can start another phase.  My fellow Shredder was just starting on the 6th week of his 1st phase, and there was no denying his increased confidence, and decreased waistline.

When I have reached my 6 week point; I'm going to pay it forward and give the gift of " The Shred Revolutionary Diet" to a friend.  I believe this would be a great time to give the gift because at this point the receiver of this gift will be able to see my success (naming and claiming),  and be more excited and willing to give the plan a try.

Stay tuned for my weekly updates on Shreding my extra weight and monthly updates on Growing my locs....

Thanks,

1st Update:

Cycle 1, Week 1, Weight Loss - 6 pounds

Two days ago Monday was the end of my first week on The Shred Diet Plan.   I slipped up a couple of times and ate a little skin on fried chicken.  The Plan called for your meat not to be fried, but a couple of times fried was all I had.  I don't recommend anyone else doing this; just imagin how much more weight I could have lost if I had'nt had that fried chicken :-(

I could've done better on my exercise.  London (my 3 year old yorkie-female) and I walked a couple of blocks on 3 days; in week 2 I plan to exercise the recommended 5 days a week.

Cycle 1, Week 2, Weight Loss - 2 pounds

Cycle 1, Week 3, Weight Loss - 2 pounds

Week two went off with no problems; follow the plan to the letter. (except exercise :-/ )

Week three had more smoothies in it, and I'm using that as my excuse to why I slipped up and ate pizza on day 6.  Although I had that litle slip up; I returned to doing the plan by the letter on day seven, and lost two pounds for the week. Yeah!

Cycle 2, Week 4 Weight Loss - 2 pounds

Sorry I have been MIA, but in my 1st clycle I lost 16 lbs  total.  My 2nd cycle I haven't been exactly going by the script but I have lost 4 lbs; for a total of 20 lbs.  For an average of 1 lb per week.  I've also started this gluten free project.  I am finding it difficult and expensive to combine the two diets.  It's been two weeks since I started my gluten free diet; I'm sure they'll interact as soon as I change out all my foods that contain gluten and find a good place to buy them.  Walmart has a limited selection of gluten products; so I'm going to try Kroger and see what they have to offer.  I'll be back soon with my progress.  Pray for me please.

I have not been faithful to my Shread Nation life style :-( I have been hovering around 20, 21 & 22 pounds lost. Got to get back focused. I am going by the plan, but not strictly. I eat my meals and snacks at the interval they should be eaten but many of my choices are questionable :-/ I'm drinking the required water, and exercising some. I weigh-In every Monday; that's how I know where I am hovering. That's all for now; will return with my Monday weigh-in results on monday; gain :-( or loss :-) Sunday, September 08, 2013

Widow's Peak

For years I was ashamed of my widow’s peak; you know; that hair that some people have that grows down the middle of their forehead; about a quarter of an inch or so.  Some people call it an Eddie Munster; after the little boy on the television show “The Munsters”.  Every time I got a retouched relaxer I would instruct my beautician to shave it off.  When I decided to grow my natural hair I decided that also meant growing out my peak; accepting it as a part of me.  A few months ago I was having dinner out with a few of my girlfriends, and one of them said … “when we were in high school I used to wonder what that was on your forehead.”  Back in the day I would have went home and shaved my peak off, but call it self love or wisdom from age; it didn’t bother me one bit.  Celebrities Garcelle Beauvais (Fancy from the Jaime Foxx Show), Terrance Howard, both Vanessa Williams’ and Denzel Washington also have widows peaks.  As you can see I’m in good company J

My Big Chop Story

I did my big chop at the end of December and kept it under wraps from my husband for a month.  I told him I was going to cut the relaxed ends from my hair before I did it; his response was... "no you're not; I don't like women with natural hair.  After I gave him the eye and asked him what he meant by women:-/  He couldn't come up with one real reason why he didn't like natural hair "on women".  I came up with a reason. Since we have been together I've always shoulder length or longer hair.  I believe it was a ploy to bully me into not cutting my hair.  Let me tell you how I kept my BC from him for a whole month.  I work in an environment where I can where a baseball cap, and at night I started wearing a satin bonnet.  I guess he noticed one night that he hadn't seen my hair in a while and he took the bonnet of my head and dropped his jaw.  Since that night I have been out of the natural hair closet; in my personal life; I have yet to come out at work.  My husband has now accepted my BC, but he’s not loving it yet; he loves long hair.  It will be at least a year or two before my hair is long again; so until then; I’ll try to wear cute hair styles and clothes, a little make up, and nice earrings; he likes when I’m "going out on a date cute" :-)
